Welcome to the Student Sorting Kit 2009 site.

In 1999 we were asked by a Head of Year in a London school if it was possible to develop a computer application capable of sorting 240 students into 8 tutor groups whilst abiding by the following rules:

  • maintain positive friendship groups
  • break up negative friendship groups
  • balance the distribution of students from the main feeder schools
  • balance academic ability
  • balance ethnicities
  • evenly distribute students with certain special educational needs

Later that year, we supplied the school with a trial version. It was an instant success. The tutor groups were balanced in such a way that, for the first time, teachers could not identify a "most challenging" Year 7 class.

Naturally, other neighbouring schools began to show interest and in 2000, we decided to release the first full version of the program, known as the Student Sorting Application. Over the next few years we worked with schools to improve the program.

Now known as the Student Sorting Kit, it is used by over 1800 U.K. schools to create balanced tutor groups and other classes contained within the curriculum.
